Juggling Acts: The Real-Life Challenges of School Business Managers

Being a School Business Manager (SBM) is like keeping a bunch of plates spinning at once. From stretching tight budgets to wading through paperwork, let’s dive into the day-to-day challenges that SBMs tackle with a friendly touch. Over the next few weeks, we will look at these in more detail.

Financial Pressures:

One of the primary challenges SBMs face is managing tight budgets. Schools often operate with limited resources, and SBMs must find ways to allocate funds judiciously while ensuring that educational standards are maintained. Changes in government funding and uncertainties in the economic landscape contribute to the complexity of financial planning for schools.

Regulatory Compliance:

Schools in England and Wales are subject to numerous regulations, and SBMs must stay abreast of changes to ensure compliance. Navigating through financial regulations, safeguarding policies, and employment laws requires constant vigilance. Failure to comply can lead to legal consequences and reputational damage for the school.

Technological Advancements:

The rapid pace of technological advancements poses a challenge for SBMs in adapting to new tools and systems. Keeping up with technology is like trying to catch a train that never slows down. Integrating technology into administrative processes can enhance efficiency, but it requires ongoing training and investment. SBMs must strike a balance between embracing innovation and ensuring staff members are adequately equipped to utilize new technologies.

Staff Management and Wellbeing:

SBMs are often responsible for human resource management within schools. Balancing the needs of the staff, addressing workplace challenges, and promoting staff wellbeing are crucial tasks, like conducting an orchestra; everyone needs to be in tune. The demands of the education sector, combined with budget constraints, can lead to increased workloads and stress for both SBMs and their staff.

Changing Educational Landscape:

The educational landscape is constantly evolving, with new curriculum requirements, assessment methods, and pedagogical approaches. SBMs must stay informed about these changes and adapt school resources accordingly. SBMs need to stay ahead of the trends, making sure the school is up-to-date. This dynamic environment adds an extra layer of complexity to strategic planning and resource allocation.

Procurement Challenges:

Procuring goods and services at the best value without compromising quality is a continuous challenge for SBMs. SBMs are the bargain hunters of the school world, making sure they get the best deals on everything from pencils to playground equipment. Negotiating contracts, managing suppliers, and ensuring cost-effective procurement practices demand a skill set that goes beyond traditional financial management.

Stakeholder Engagement:

SBMs interact with a diverse range of stakeholders, including parents, teachers, local authorities, and governing bodies. Effective communication and engagement are vital for building positive relationships. SBMs must navigate these interactions diplomatically to address concerns and align the school community with its goals.

Environmental Sustainability:

Increasing awareness of environmental issues has led to a growing emphasis on sustainability. SBMs are tasked with integrating eco-friendly practices into the school’s operations, which may involve changes in procurement, waste management, and energy consumption.

In conclusion, the role of School Business Managers is varied, requiring a comprehensive skill set to address the diverse challenges they face. Navigating all of these different challenges is no mean feat. Despite these challenges, SBMs continue to play a crucial role in fostering the effective administration and growth of educational institutions. So, hats off to the School Business Managers – the unsung heroes making sure our schools run smoothly, even when the challenges come at them thick and fast on a daily basis!

Earth Day 2022

Make Every Day an Earth Day!

Earth Day 2022.

Earth Day

“The truth is: the natural world is changing. And we are totally dependent on that world. It provides our food, water and air. It is the most precious thing we have and we need to defend it.”David Attenborough.

How did it all start?

Earth Day was founded in 1970, by a US Senator (Gaylord Nelson) after he witness the ravages of the 1969 oil spill. Earth Day was inspired by the student anti-war movement, Nelson realised that if he could combine that energy with the emerging public awareness about the environment, then it could be pushed into the national political agenda. The 22nd April was chosen as the date for Earth Day because it was between the American Spring Break and end of year exams.

An oil spill in 1969 inspired the first Earth Day.

“The world must come together to confront climate change. There is little scientific dispute that if we do nothing, we will face more drought, famine and mass displacement that will fuel more conflict for decades.” – Barack Obama

This Earth Day

The Earth Day theme for 2022 is ‘Invest In Our Planet’. There are Earth Day events taking place across the globe with activities. In the UK, including an Earth Day Art club in London and a ‘Nurturing New Nature’ initiative in Cambridge. You can find activities closer to you here: https://www.earthday.org/

“The climate crisis has already been solved. We already have all the facts and solutions. All we have to do is to wake up and change.” Greta Thunberg

Be the difference

The Great Global Cleanup, this is a worldwide campaign to remove billions of pieces of trash from neighborhoods, beaches, rivers, lakes, trails, and parks — reducing waste and plastic pollution, improving habitats, and preventing harm to wildlife and humans. Sustainable fashion

What is sustainable fashion? The fashion industry is responsible for over 8% of total greenhouse gas emissions.  Sustainable Fashion refers to a clothing supply chain that is ecologically and socially responsible. Find out more here: https://action.earthday.org/the-fashion-industry-must-change

The Canopy Project, this is aiming to improve our shared environment by planting trees across the globe. Since 2010, the Earth Day Organisation  has planted tens of millions of trees with The Canopy Project, working worldwide to strengthen communities. You can find out more here: https://www.earthday.org/campaign/the-canopy-project/

Climate Literacy, this is a project aiming to create a generation of citizens, workers, students, and leaders ready for climate change. They are trying to improve public understanding of how to stop climate change and environmental harm. You can find out more here: https://www.earthday.org/campaign/climate-environmental-literacy/

“We are in the midst of a crisis that is now, I hope, well understood. Global warming, climate change, the devastating loss of biodiversity are the greatest threats that humanity has ever faced and one largely of our own creation.” -Prince Charles

Make a difference in your daily life

If you would like to get involved without attending an official event, you can even try some of the following activities:

  1. Walk to work or school, cycle or take public transport
  2. Use a reusable coffee cup
  3. Make sure you recycle
  4. Go paperless as much as you can
  5. Hang birdseed ornaments
  6. Take a reuseable bag to the shop
  7. Plant a tree
  8. Go meat or dairy free at least once a week
  9. Carry a reusable water bottle or coffee cup.
  10. Build an insect hotel
  11. Grow your own fruit and veg
  12. Buy local produce
  13. Turn off unneeded lights.
  14. Turn the tap off when brushing your teeth.
  15. Most importantly…Spread the message!

There are so many ways to foster a love of nature and to  motivate children into caring for our planet. These activities teach children how to reduce their carbon footprint, appreciate everything the earth gives us and take steps towards protecting the environment, and then hopefully… they will pass this on. And remember, you can always find more ideas and activities on our blog here: https://reschool.co.uk/blogs

Happy Earth Day!

Introducing Budding Issues

Announcing ‘Budding Issues’ – a new way to work with your children on accessible and engaging Eco challenges!

Budding issues?

WE NEVER…
underestimate the power of pupil voice. ‘Pupil Voice’ groups provides pupils with the opportunity to become involved in how and what they learn. This is important because this gives children a real voice in issues that affect them, allowing them to make contributions towards the development of their school

pupil voice

It could be looking at school dinners, littering around the neighbourhood, recycling options for school, or school issues. Whatever the occasion, we want to help you provide the best for your children.

THE PROBLEM…

is time, often as school staff this is a premium we cannot afford. School staff do not have the time to read in excess of 5 page booklets to run a lunchtime or afterschool club, believe us, we have been there!

THE SOLUTION…
is our ‘Budding Issues’ activities. We have condensed all of the information that you need on 1 sheet. All the facts, all the information, all the ideas and all the next steps, ALL on one page

How will it work?

We will add the Budding Issues for the week, every week. This is free for you to view and download and share with your children. You can use them in school or set them as Home Learning challenges. Every week, we’ll edit it so you can view the new issues.

Reschool – one year on and what a year!

Recently we celebrated our one anniversary and we thought we would take this moment to share the story of how we got started.

The concept

It was a year ago and I was on my planning and preparation time. As I was looking over some school data, one of the school business managers came in the room and expressed how they had wasted two hours.

The staff member was also a Business Manager at a Nursery and they had been looking for chairs earlier. At the time, the only way to source school items was to email or phone schools. The Business Manager then emailed and phoned other schools and Nurseries in the area to find surplus items that they would be willing to sell, which meant two hours searching.

This story stayed with me. I thought that there must be a simpler way where schools and vetted users can share items. This would then save School Business Managers hours of time. The task mentioned above, of looking for chairs, could take 15 minutes to scale down regionally and save time and money for schools.

Developing Reschool

Patrick, one Reschool's founders.

Following this, I started to talk to my best friend Patrick Haley. We worked together to shape the concept of Reschool into a more refined idea. We bought the domain, registered the business and started speaking to a Web Developer.

Dan is a renowned and respected developer of web apps. He has worked with a variety of companies achieve their dream, whether small start-ups or huge suppliers to supermarkets. Dan is also an old school friend of mine and fellow alumni of Hesketh Fletcher’s High School’s IT GCSE. You can learn more about Dan and his company, Knights Digital, here.

We collaborated to shape the Reschool website into the space for schools to share and sell resources. The Reschool listings platform is a vetted, secure space where schools and approved traders can exchange goods. This ensures schools have direct and secure access to other schools, where they could share, hire, sell and swap resources.

Growth

Since then, we have a team of schools that have joined the Reschool Community, our Activity Challenges, like the one we created for National Tree Week, have been seen and shared by over 50, 000 people and already, we have a strong community of people on social media who support us.

A year ago, we never thought we would have seen this success so quickly. So, we thank everyone who has spoken to us, shared advice, liked and shared a post, joined the community or helped spread the message of Reschool.

Thank you all, it means the world to us!

Adam

National Tree Week

We thought we would celebrate the UK’s biggest annual tree celebration, National Tree Week.

National Tree Week is all about getting lots of communities to do more to help their local environment by planting as many trees as they can.

How did National Tree Week start?

In 1973, there was a big problem with a Dutch Elm Disease, which was killing lots of elm trees around the UK. In response, a campaign was started by Sydney Chapman and Peter Walker, two members of parliament who thought something needed to be done. It was a year-long campaign called “Plant a Tree in 73” which encouraged the planting of as many trees as they could across the year.

This was so successful that the following year ‘The Tree Council’ group was born to keep encouraging people to plant trees. Except now, instead of working over a whole year, we have National Tree Week every year at the end of November.

It starts in November because this is when the tree planting season starts, it’s best for them to be planted as it’s starting to get cold. Even though the event only lasts for one week, tree planting season lasts right up until March.

Download our ‘in-tree-guing’ challenge cards:

We have made some challenges to help your children embrace National Tree Week. We hope you enjoy them, please share them on social media and tag @reschooluk.

Thank you!

Mental Health Day Activities

What are you planning to do on Saturday 10th October?

This Saturday is World Mental Health Day and to celebrate this year’s theme of ‘mental health for all’ we thought we would create some handy guides for schools. Spending time outdoors or bringing nature into your life can benefit both your mental and physical wellbeing. We enjoy nature in so many ways,  it could be growing food or flowers, exercising outdoors or even being around animals, all can have positive effects.

According to Mind, being in nature can:

  • improve your mood
  • reduce feelings of stress or anger
  • help you take time out and feel more relaxed
  • improve your physical health
  • improve your confidence and self-esteem
  • help you be more active
  • help you make new connections
  • provide peer support

How can we support students?

Mental health problems can affect anyone, any day of the year and the 10th October is a great day to show your support for better mental health and start looking after your own wellbeing and the wellbeing of your class.

Some children and young people have enjoyed being off school, others will have really struggled – with the coronavirus outbreak keeping them at home and away from friends.

Our Activities

We hope you enjoy these challenges, we enjoyed putting them together! We think you and you pupils will enjoy how they recycle natural materials and get them thinking about the outdoors in different ways.

They are available to download below:

What else?

There are a few staggering pieces of information that show how important Mental Health is and how helpful it can be for learners in later life to be shown strategies.

Camhs:

Between five and 10 years old, the split between girls and boys is just about even. But by 17, a quarter of young women have a mental health disorder, more than twice the number of young men.

https://www.local.gov.uk/about/campaigns/bright-futures/bright-futures-camhs/child-and-adolescent-mental-health-and

Mental Health Organisation

10% of children and young people have a clinical diagnosable mental health problem, yet 70% of children and adolescents who experience mental health problems have not had appropriate interventions at a sufficiently early age.

https://www.mentalhealth.org.uk/statistics/mental-health-statistics-children-and-young-people

This shows us how important it is for us to get it right in childhood. To be shown strategies or activities that help us to boost our mental and physical wellbeing.

How else can you support?

You can find some more guidance on how to support your learners on these websites.

National Recycle Week

The 21st September starts National Recycle Week, a week to celebrate recycling and National Recycle Week is now in its 17th year. Recycle Week is organised by Recyclenow and Wrap (learn more about their projects here).

Every year has a theme, this year the theme is ‘Thanking the nation: ‘Together – We Recycle’, you can learn more about the Recycle week campaign and the official partners by clicking here.

Recyclenow want Recycle Week 2020 to recognise the sacrifices and hard work that key workers and everyone in the community have made to keep recycling going and create positive change in the world around us. We agree that our recycling and waste key workers have heroically to carry on collecting while the world slowed down around them.

VE Day Activities

The 8th May celebrates VE Day or Victory in Europe Day, a day we celebrate the formal acceptance by the Allies of World War II of Nazi Germany’s unconditional surrender of its armed forces on 8 May 1945; this year marks the 75th anniversary of VE Day.

Normally the day would be marked with street parties, parades and frivolity but unfortunately celebrations will be different this year. The coronavirus outbreak means that there will be no street parties, parades or concerts this year, but nonetheless there is plenty going on to celebrate and we wanted to help so the Elves at Reschool HQ have been busy creating some activities that people can enjoy.

There are crafting activities, art projects, music and dance making, and even some projects for those with green thumbs. Quite a lot of the activities utilise recycled materials which is helpful at this time, when shopping isn’t easy, but also quite historically accurate and reminiscent of the blitz spirit of carrying on and ‘making do and mending’.

We hope you enjoy these challenges, we enjoyed putting them together! They are available to download below:

Thanks and keep safe!
